Review: Dead Ringer by Jessie Rosen

Note: This ARC was provided by Full Fathom Five in exchange for an honest review.

Laura Rivers is the new girl in Englewood High, but the looks she's been getting from her new classmates aren't those of expected curiosity. They take one look at her and they realize that her resemblance to someone they once knew is uncanny and leaves them perturbed. After all, Laura seems to be the doppelganger for none other than Sarah Castro-Tanner, a girl who committed suicide the year before. But Laura is out to show everyone that she's her own person and she's making her own set of friends and has even snagged the attention of one boy in particular. However, curious things begin to happen to certain classmates, leaving them feeling haunted. It appears there's more to Sarah's death than meets the eye. Someone wants the truth to now come out and that truth may very well lie with the girl who looks like her.

Dead Ringer is a young adult suspense thriller by author Jessie Rosen and is a book about Englewood High transferee Laura Rivers and her being the haunting image of Sarah Castro-Tanner, a girl who took her own life a year ago. The two could have been twins and that alone is eerie, but when strange messages and the like begin to make their way to certain people, it's clear that Sarah's supposed suicide has left many unanswered questions, making her death suspicious. The story is told from three separate points of view: Laura, Charlie Sanders, and the mysterious Sasha. There are lulls in the pacing, but you're constantly trying to figure out what's actually going on--some things are easier to decipher than others so there were a few surprises--so your attention doesn't really waver too much or for extended time periods.

Take note that this book is NOT a standalone. Yes, it ends in a cliffhanger, one that is rather evil because it does what it's supposed to do--it leaves you hanging, not giving you all the answers that you're looking for. Laura, Charlie, and Sasha have their respective motivations for the actions that they've taken throughout the story, but even that is rather muddy at this point. I'm not entirely sure when the sequel will be released, so if you're the type that's easily frustrated by cliffhangers, you may want to hold off until there's a definite publication date. However, if cliffies don't necessarily bug you, Dead Ringer is the kind of book that will appeal to you if you're a fan of Pretty Little Liars and books of the same vein. This was an intriguing read and one that has me keeping an eye out for its sequel. I'm giving this four out of five stars. ♥
