Review: Sweet Surrender by K. Bromberg (Backstage Pass #2)

Note: An advance reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author.

Jase "Gizmo" Gizmodo is the third member of BENT to get his story told, with Hawkin "Hawke" Play kicking things off in Sweet Ache, the sixth book in the Driven series released in 2015, followed by Vincent "Vince" Jennings in Sweet Regret, the first book in the Backstage Pass series published in 2023. Sweet Surrender is a marriage of convenience romance, with Jase finding himself in need of an image revamp if he has any hopes of convincing a judge to allow him to take part in BENT's upcoming world tour while he's still on parole. His older brother's--who also happens to be his lawyer--advice? Get married to someone who isn't like the usual kind of woman that Jase has been to be with. While he isn't too keen on the idea of tying the knot with anyone, BENT's drummer believes he has the perfect woman in mind--Hendrix Wright, baker and owner of Cookie Cutter. In exchange for being his wife on paper and in public, Hendrix gets an influx of cash to help her business. It should all work out--as long as they don't mistakenly fall in love.

I've yet to read Sweet Ache, but the glimpses I got of Jase/Gizmo in Sweet Regret made it clear how much of a playboy--I had a whole different term in mind, but I'm trying to keep this review PG--he was. So, the idea that he had to find himself a wife to better his chances of a judge signing off on him being part of BENT's world tour was such an evil genius moment for K. Bromberg. Pairing him with someone like Hendrix was great because she wasn't some wallflower who needed to be rescued or constantly coddled and had to be reminded that she was better than she gave herself credit for. While it was true that Jase had millions and was adored by countless fans, his history highlighted just how heartrending his childhood was, affecting him even in adulthood. He needed a woman--a partner--like Hendrix to help him come to certain realizations. I also appreciated how much Jase's relationship with his older brother, Nathaniel, evolved and grew. All in all, Sweet Surrender was a 4.5-starred read that exceeded all of my expectations.
