Review: Grimm Prince by NS Johnson (Grimm's Valley Romances #1)
Note: An advance reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author via Valentine PR.
Grimm Prince is the first book in the Grimm's Valley Romances series from NS Johnson, this being a pen name for Ines Johnson. This is also my introduction to this author's writing, regardless of pseudonym, and with an intriguing blurb and a curiosity when it comes to fairy tale retellings, I offered little resistance to this grumpy/sunshine romance.
Readers are introduced to an intriguing cast of characters, led by Jake Grimm, a descendent of the town's founders and a military veteran who is returning to the town of Grimm's Valley to work on Grimm House, the family-owned estate that he hopes will be a place of solace and healing for his fellow vets and closest friends. He's paired with Rosie Briarwood, oldest daughter of the mayor and the sheriff, and someone brimming with optimism and a believer in fate.
There was no denying the connection between Jake and Rosie. It was clear that what they shared was more than a passing fancy, but I do wish that the author had delved a wee bit more into the nuances of their burgeoning relationship. The supporting characters, particularly, Jake's and Rosie's best friends, respectively, have me curious as to what awaits them going forward. NS Johnson's writing is engaging, albeit a tad ornate, although I wonder if it's because this is a fairy tale retelling, even if it is a modern-day one. This series starter gets 3.5 stars.
