Review: Today's Promises by S.R. Grey (Promises #2)

Today’s Promises is the second novel in the S.R. Grey-penned Promises series and continues the story of now eighteen-year-olds Jaynie Cumberland and Flynn O’Neill, which began in Tomorrow’s Lies. Jaynie and Flynn are re-starting their lives, leaving behind the horrors of Forsaken and finding hope in Lawrence. But the shadows continue to follow them, with lingering nightmares and memories that haunt them incessantly. Their tormentors may be prison, but the very real possibility of Allison Lowry returning and finishing what she started, especially with Jaynie, has the young couple wary and anxious. When a detective asks for their assistance in a case connected to the Lowry mother and daughter team, Flynn and Jaynie are unsure if enough time has passed for them to return to the house of horrors that fostered fear more than anything else. Will they ever be able to break free from their past and create a future?
Jaynie and Flynn may have physically distanced themselves from Forsaken, but emotionally, they’re still chained to it, with too many memories that they’re unable to fully let go of. Being asked to help out on the case Detective Silver is heading has them returning to the one place they swore they’d never go back to. This mystery presents an interesting twist, but I did wonder why a detective would keep vials of blood in his car instead of them being in a lab and why he would allow two eighteen-year-olds to actually touch potential evidence in a location where a crime may have been committed. This is what I get for watching too many police procedural shows. Aside from that, the story goes as expected. I liked seeing how Jaynie and Flynn’s relationship outside the confines of the Lowry house, but it was how they, along with Mandy, Cody, and Callie remained tethered as one family that I loved. Four stars for Today’s Promises. ♥
