Review: Best Kind of Awkward by Becca Seymour (Collier's Creek #1)

It's been a while since I last read something by Becca Seymour, and I'm so glad that I've been given an opportunity to rediscover her writing via the first book in the multi-author Collier's Creek M/M small-town romance series. Best Kind of Awkward is the story of Colton Green and William Evans. The former is a thirty-year-old who missed out on an opportunity to go pro as a basketball player but is now a coach for the newly formed youth basketball team, as well as Collier's High's brand-new science teacher; the latter is a thirty-nine-year-old single father to ten-year-old Maverick. Colton has just moved to Collier's Creek, while Will and Mav returned to Will's hometown five years ago. Assisting Colton with the basketball team gives them time to bond--and maybe teach Will a thing or ten about the actual sport. There's also an underlying--and undeniable--attraction to their friendship, but secrets abound, and they're the kind that could end what has just started.

This series starter was the best kind of awkward in the most adorable way possible. Colton and Will were drawn to each other from the get-go, but I liked seeing their relationship begin as friends before developing into more. The attraction may have been ever present, but having that trust grow and flourish the more time they spent together was what made it clear that this wasn't a mere fling between them. I also appreciated that the author made sure that Mav had his own special relationship with Colton as a coach and mentor. There were a number of notable supporting characters, especially Cassius, Colton's closest friend and professional football player, and Tony, Will's best friend and business partner. There was a lot to like about Best Kind of Awkward--from the small town and the age gap, to love after loss and single parenthood, and Becca Seymour has made this first visit to Collier's Creek, Wyoming a non-awkward, endearing one. 4.5 stars.
