They were best friends since they were children, and at the age of nine, Madelyn Emery informed ten-year-old Lucas Rivers that they would marry one day. Fast forward to their high school years that saw them drifting apart, with Maddy's hopes that Luke would see her as more than his best friend die as he asked someone else to prom and focused solely on football and leaving their hometown behind...leaving her behind. Four years living separate lives, with neither one making much of an effort to keep what was left of their friendship alive. And then one injury ended Luke's football playing dreams and finds him back in their small...back to where the girl he left but never ever forgot was at. Luke hopes to rekindle their friendship, but when he sees Maddy, he realizes he wants to be more than her friend. Maddy, however, has never forgotten how Luke unknowingly broke her heart countless times over the years, and the last thing she wants is to have him get close enough to do it yet again. He may think that he wants to be with her, but Maddy believes far too much that there's one other thing that Luke needs more than her.

C.A. Harms gives readers a sweet love story about two former best friends who grew apart but managed to find their way back to each other a few years later. Maddy knows all about rejection at the hands of Luke, and while I wouldn't necessarily call Luke's lack of reciprocation callous. If anything, he was either clueless or careless, but never cruel. Of course, that's little consolation to a girl in love, but when you fall for someone, there's never a true guarantee that those feelings will be returned. I liked that the author didn't lay the blame on their estranged friendship solely on Luke because let's be honest here, they both let go of what they had, with neither one really making an effort to hold on. I also liked that Maddy held out for as long as she did and that she said what needed to be said to him early on, although I would have wished she held out just a bit longer and made Luke work a tad more for her affection and attention. There isn't too much in terms of angst and drama and the lighthearted humor helped make this a fun and entertaining read. C.A. Harms left me satisfied with her four-starred Whisper Forever. ♥
