Review: Sunlight by Devney Perry (Haven River Ranch #2)
Note: An advance reader copy (ARC) was provided by Montlake.
Sunlight is the second novel in the Haven River Ranch series penned by Devney Perry. This can be read as a standalone, but if you've read the first book, Crossroads, then there's no way you could have missed twenty-nine-year-old Jax Haven, the younger of the two Haven brothers who own Haven River Ranch alongside Jax's sister-in-law. At the end of the aforementioned series starter, readers are given an idea as to who Jax is paired with in his book--the new manager of the resort and lodge, twenty-eight-year-old Sasha Vaughn. It was clear at the end of book one that there was some noteworthy tension between Jax and Sasha, and let me just say that their story exceeded whatever expectations I had, which was naturally a truly good thing overall.
Sasha Vaughn had her reasons for moving from the sand and surf of California to the mountain ranges and vistas of Montana, the most important one being her new job. Coming in as the manager of Haven River Ranch was going to be a challenge, but earning double the salary she was receiving previously would make it worthwhile. Having to work with Jax Haven, however, was going to test her mettle, given that denying the attraction that's been there from the moment they met at the local supermarket has become more difficult the more time they spend together, what her boss going on maternity leave. Then everything changed the night of the annual holiday party, especially with an unexpected baby on the way.
Sweet and steamy with quite a bit of angst in a small town? Yes, please! I loved Jax and Sasha, and while there may have been that instant connection between the two of them at the very beginning, things were rather complicated given Sasha's circumstances, particularly what led her to make the move from California to Montana. From the bickering to the banter, I was wholly entertained by these two, but while this was a fairly lighthearted read, there were issues that I empathized with. My heart broke for Jax and how things were with the only woman he ever considered his mom, and same goes for Sasha and her younger brother. But a happily-ever-after was had by all who mattered on Haven River Ranch, so five stars go to Sunlight.
