Review: How My Neighbor Stole Christmas by Meghan Quinn
Note: An advance reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author.
How My Neighbor Stole Christmas is a holiday romance from Meghan Quinn with some major How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss except with fake relationship feels to warm you up during these cooler months (unless you live in the Southern hemisphere). Set in the fictional town of Kringletown, Colorado, we have ourselves Cole Black, quite possibly the love child of Ebenezer Scrooge and the Grinch except with a whole lot of grumpy hotness, who pretty much lives in a place that is the epitome of the holiday he abhors most all year round. So, he does his best to ignore the holly, the jolly, and everything in between, which is easier said than done. Then Storee Taylor moves in next door, which was bad enough, to take care of her ailing great aunt, and makes things oh-so-worse by deciding to enter the town's Christmas Kringle competition. What's a guy like Cole to do? Why, sign up and give her a run for her money, of course. Add in a fake relationship into the mix, and well, neither one expected jingle the other's bell in such Kringle-y fashion. These neighbors may not only be stealing each other's Christmas but they could end up stealing each other's bruised hearts as well.
It's never too early to read a holiday romance, especially when it's a romantic comedy written by Meghan Quinn. I'm happy to report that this standalone is most certainly NOT coal in your stocking; instead you get Cole, and a hilarious story with his nemesis named Storee. There were a lot of laughs to be had, which is par for the course since this is Quinn wielding the proverbial (and maybe even literal) pen here. It felt like a game of one-upmanship with Cole and Storee, but that's what happens when there's history that clouds their judgment with the whole Christmas Kringle thing. Everything gets complicated in the process, but figuring their feelings out is part of what makes this rom-com even more interesting. There's also some angst courtesy of what led to Cole to be anti-Christmas and Storee's issues with her family, and I won't say no to a bit of angst even in a rom-com. I definitely didn't go wrong with my first holiday romance read for the year with How My Neighbor Stole Christmas, which scores 4.5 stars out five stars.
