Review: Mr. Heartbreaker by Piper Rayne (The Nest #1)

Note: An advance reader copy (ARC) was provided by the authors via Valentine PR.

Mr. Heartbreaker is the first book in The Nest, a new hockey romance series from the writing duo of Piper Rayne and a spin-off of their Chicago Grizzlies series. Formerly known as The Den when three football players from the Chicago Grizzlies used to live there, The Nest is an apartment building is where certain players from the Chicago Falcons, the city's professional hockey team, reside. While you don't need to read the previous series, there are a few holdovers from there that are still very much around in the new spin-off, which is a bonus if you're familiar with this book world.

There was a time Kyleigh Nilsen promised her older brother, Conor, she would never date any of his teammates. So, she isn't really breaking that promise by hooking up with his former best friend, Rowan Landry. After all, it's just sex, and he isn't Conor's teammate. Then Conor is traded to the Chicago Falcons, the same hockey team that Rowan plays center at. Oh, and pesky feelings are beginning to complicate things. And there's that inconvenient fact that the girl Rowan is falling for happens to be the new goalie's, aka his ex-bestie's, little sister? Could hearts (and bones) be broken?

I love how this series shares ties with a previous series, yet is able to stand quite well on its own. Kyleigh and Rowan were really good together, with the latter being an honest-to-goodness sweetheart of a guy who put his girl first. There were moments of frustration when it came to Kyleigh, but there was a lot she was also dealing with, so I gave her some slack. At twenty-five and twenty-nine, Kyleigh and Rowan came off as the ages they were, meaning to say that they weren't like a couple of teenagers needing to mature. All in all, Mr. Heartbreaker was a good start to the series. Four stars!
