Review: Crossroads by Devney Perry (Haven River Ranch #1)

Note: An advance reader copy (ARC) was provided by Montlake.

A new series from Devney Perry? Yes, please! Haven River Ranch is set in Montana, with book one introducing readers to the Havens, the family that owns Crazy Mountain Cattle Resort, a place that holds bittersweet memories for the older of the two Haven sons, West, and the girl he shared several unforgettable summers with, Indya Keller. Their second chance romance plays out in Crossroads, the first novel in the new series, and it sets the bar high for the next book, Sunlight, which is already set for an October release this year.

Indya Keller was eight when she and her parents spent their first summer in Crazy Mountain Cattle Resort in Montana. She meets ten-year-old West Haven, and they spark a kinship of sorts. Over a few summers, they rekindle that friendship, which later stirs up feelings of attraction and lust, and then even more. But fifteen years after that first summer, life took Indya and West in different directions, leaving both heartbroken. But now, the woman who swore she'd never return to Montana is doing just that; only this time, it's not as West's childhood friend and former lover. It's as the ranch's owner, a fact that is met with anger. She just wants to help him; falling in love again is not in the plans.

This series starter was an emotional one, what with all the issues and history that Indya and West had to wade through. Now twenty-nine and thirty-one, respectively, we get flashbacks of the evolution of their relationship over the summers. It's not just the time and distance that were hurdles to a happily-ever-after. There were things going on with their respective families as well, and basically, life after summer break. There was a lot stacked up against Indya and West, but seeing them battle through it all--and themselves--made that HEA of theirs even more satisfying. I'm giving Crossroads 4.5 out of five stars.
