Lani Lynn Vale's new series, Carter Brothers, is a spin-off of The Fool, the seventh and final book in her Welcome to the Circus series, which wrapped up a little over a month ago. If you've read the aforementioned series ender, then you may recall that the female main character there, Ande Carter, has seven brothers, all of whom happen to work for the Dallas Police Department, alongside their parents. The eldest, Quincy, kicks things off for this new series, with his journey to his happily-ever-after playing out in the series starter, No Cap. This is a good boy/bad girl romance with a smidgen of mystery included.
Listening to your gut is a vital skill for those in law enforcement, and while police detective Quincy Carter pretty much has more than an inkling that radiology technician Hollis Aue is a bit of a troublemaker, his gut tells him that she's going to be the kind of trouble that he wants in his life. The loss of her best friend has left Hollis with a need for vengeance, and Quincy may need to remind her of a restraining order against her but he wants to get to know this intriguing woman, even if she could wreak havoc on his heart.
I quite enjoyed this new series starter. I liked the fact that Lani Lynn Vale went with the good boy/bad girl trope because it isn't as commonly used as the bad boy/good girl trope. Quincy and Hollis were opposites who were able to fit in a way that actually made them make sense as a couple. They were loyal to and protective of those who mattered most to them, and when they loved, it was intense. While there are quite a few supporting characters because of just how many Carters there are, it wasn't too difficult to keep track of them. The glimpses I got of the other brothers wasn't overwhelming; they were just enough to keep my curious. Overall, No Cap was a strong beginning to the series. 4.5 stars.
