Review: Hot to the Touch by Kate Meader (Hot in Chicago Rookies #3)

Hot to the Touch is the third and final full-length novel in the Hot in Chicago Rookies series by Kate Meader. It's preceded by Coming in Hot, a free prequel novella that can be accessed when you sign up for the author's newsletter, then by the two other full-length novels, Up in Smoke and Down in Flames. There are a couple of other free prequels that serve as introductions to the two novels, One Night Burn for Up in Smoke and White-Hot Hookup for Down in Flames, for readers who want a sample prior to diving in. (A quick FYI: these aforementioned prequels are already included in the full-length novels.)
Samuel Killian and Cassandra Ferguson may be tied together by the fact that their respective siblings--his older brother, Jake, and her younger sister, Annie--are happily married with two kids, but there isn't a whole lot of love lost when it comes to Sam and Cass. The twenty-seven-year-old firefighter and newest member of Engine 6's Rescue Squad gets a kick out of pushing the thirty-two-year-old financial advisor's buttons. Thank goodness she lives in New York, limiting their interactions to family gatherings in Chicago. Then tragedy strikes, leaving Sam and Cass not only dealing with immeasurable loss but coming to grips that they have to raise their young niece and nephew TOGETHER.
I adored this series ender! Sam and Cassie had the whole enemies-to-lovers thing going, and the tension between them was so darn palpable, I could feel it jump from the pages. I loved the character development as much as I did the story. Admittedly, there were some teary-eyed moments, but there were also a lot of lighthearted ones. Seeing Sam and Cassie become a family with Maya and Spence was both heartwarming and gratifying. Hot to the Touch was a five-starred way to end the sizzling Hot in Chicago Rookies series.
