Review: "Soul Crossed" by Lisa Gail Green (Of Demons and Angels #1)

Note: This ARC was provided by Full Fathom Five via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Josh is seventeen and Grace is sixteen. They should be enjoying all the things that teenagers their age are into. Only they can't...because they're both dead. Josh is in Hell, has been made into a demon, and is on an assignment from Lucifer himself. Grace is in Heaven, has been made into an angel, and is on an assignment from the angel in charge of her training. They both return to Earth and go about befriending the same teenage boy whose soul they both need in order to accomplish their missions and be rewarded.

Cam is a boy who's soul is waiting to be turned, and while it can go in either direction, his thoughts, feelings, and actions look like everything is more in favor of Josh than Grace. However, Josh and Grace have no idea that the other is an otherworldly creature and Cam has no clue as to who they really are or that they're there solely for him. As Cam's actions begin to devolve, Josh and Grace find themselves distracted by their own feelings for one another, feelings that they know they shouldn't really entertain.

When the truth of who they are comes out, Josh and Grace need to decide if they're still willing to pursue what's going on between the two of them and whether they can accomplish what they set out to do regarding Cam. With interfering powers that be and a human that appears to be beyond saving and no longer needs a push to fulfill his dark destiny, Josh and Grace learn what it means to truly love someone so different from you and to find that one person you would be willing to sacrifice almost anything for.

Soul Crossed was a book that had me feeling a bit frustrated but then, by the time I got to the end of the story, I saw that there were indeed reasons behind what I saw as inconsistencies. I can't really go into them in my review, lest I spoil the story for future readers. Suffice it to say that keeping an open mind and saving your judgment 'til the end will allow you to have a better appreciation for the book as a whole. ^.^ There are twists, one I saw coming and one that surprised me, that keep things fresh and interesting.

This is the first book in the Of Demons and Angels series by author Lisa Gail Green but it can be read as a standalone. There are no cliffhangers but I'm curious to see where the story will take readers next, especially after that sneak peek of the second book. For fans of bad boy-good girl young adult (YA) romances, Soul Crossed is a story that puts a creative paranormal twist to the genre. I'm a believer in angels, God-given free will, and the healing power of true love, so I'm giving this book four stars. ♥
