Review: "Tall, Dark, and Vampire" by Sara Humphreys (Dead in the City #1)

Before Olivia Hollingsworth was turned three hundred years ago, she was in love and engaged to a man she loved with all her heart and wanted to spend the rest of her life with--Douglas Threadgood. Since his death, she's never been with any other man, human or otherwise, and has accepted the life she now leads. She owns a club called The Coven and considers her progeny and her faithful dog Van Helsing as her family. She's a private citizen in their world until a rash of crimes changes things as she knows it.

Vampires don't have dreams when they sleep so the fact that Olivia's been having dreams for two decades is somewhat strange. That each one is about one particular person makes her wonder if the ghost of Douglas is haunting her from beyond the grave and infiltrating her dreams. Then one murdered human who's been drained of blood after being seen in her club has her crossing paths with the police detective in charge of the case, a human who shockingly looks exactly like the one man who owns her heart.

Doug Paxton is a man who knows he was born to be a cop. His latest case takes him to The Coven, a popular club, and when he meets the owner, he's taken aback by how eerily similar she is to the red-haired woman who's been invading his dreams for too many years to count. Between trying to solve the case that has now double the number of victims and trying to not think about Olivia, Doug has his hands full. When he and his partner are attacked in the alley outside The Coven, Doug's life is changed forever.

I absolutely loved Tall, Dark, and Vampire, the first book in the Dead in the City series by Sara Humphreys. While the stars were definitely Olivia and Doug, we get to learn a bit about the other characters in the vampire world and they're quite an interesting bunch. Olivia is such a strong and independent female but her love for her coven makes her easy to relate to even if she does have fangs. Doug was equally as intense but his vulnerability later on shows him as sensitive and caring.

This had a combination of paranormal romance and mystery thriller and I was surprised to find out that the person I suspected wasn't the one committing the murders! I have a great appreciation for books that are still able to do that. With a story that had drama, humor, action, mystery, love, and steam and characters that have heart, albeit non-beating, Tall, Dark, and Vampire exceeded whatever expectations I had, making it way too easy for me to give this fantastic paranormal romance five out of five stars! ♥

Date read: 27 February 2015
