Review: "Trust in Me" by Samantha Chase (The Montgomery Brothers #2)
William Montgomery is thrilled that he successfully brought together his youngest son Lucas and his executive assistant Emma. Not only does he have his son closer to home but he's got a new daughter-in-law to add to the fold. Now, William turns his attention to his middle son, realizing that both his older children are too focused on working for the company to truly enjoy their lives and to find that one person that will make them want to settle down. Will this father's matchmaking work a second time around?
Jason Montgomery desperately needs an executive assistant, but so far, he's had terrible experiences with each one thrown his way. Each potential one thinks that what happened between Lucas and Emma will happen with them and Jason. So, this Montgomery decides that he needs to one important qualification to the mix: his executive assistant must be married. When his father suggests someone from customer service, Jason isn't sure that things will work out but his father insists that his choice is the right one.
Maggie Barrett is grateful to the Montgomery patriarch for helping her start over after a nightmarish experience with her former boss. Now that she's being given an opportunity to go back to being an executive assistant, Maggie decides that she's ready, believing that Jason Montgomery will be a trustworthy boss and that her status as a supposedly married woman will fend off any advances. The only one who knows she isn't actually married is William Montgomery and he's promised to keep her secret.
As Jason and Maggie spend a huge amount of time together going from state to state while working on the company's expansion plans, they begin to see a different side to one another, giving them a greater sense of appreciation for each other. They're also very much attracted to one another, and while Maggie occasionally forgets that she's a "married" woman, Jason reminds himself of that "fact" every time he's tempted to do something he knows he shouldn't...until the time comes that neither can help themselves.
When the truth about Maggie's past with her former boss comes to light, Jason is understandably upset on her behalf. Just as their relationship flourishes and Maggie gives Jason her complete trust, Maggie's past catches up with her again, but Jason does something that makes Maggie believe that she's been deceived. Knowing that he's hurt the one woman he's ever loved, will Jason be able to fix things and will Maggie ever learn the truth. One Montgomery office romance ended happily, but there are no guarantees in love.
Okay, I'm just going to put this out there: this is the second time that a Montgomery son has become involved with an employee. I'm pretty sure that sort of thing is discouraged because the possibility of a sexual harassment lawsuit is always looming in the horizon should things not work out. And what is it with both women being meek and docile one minute, then all snippy and answering back the next? I mean, really? Maybe William Montgomery needs to start looking OUTSIDE the office for potential women.
I will say, though, that other than the boss and assistant angle, the stories are different. Trust in Me is the second book in The Montgomery Brothers series and the idea of Maggie pretending to be married and Jason trying to fight his attraction to her was fresh and interesting. As was the case with the first book, this was a fairly quick read, so if you're looking for a contemporary romance that is light on the drama, you may want to give this standalone a look-see. Trust in Me by Samantha Chase gets 3.5 out of five stars. ♥
