Review: The Soul Mate by Kendall Ryan (Roommates #4)

Note: This ARC was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.

The Soul Mate is the fourth addition to the Roommates series from Kendall Ryan and starts off with a very romantic comedy feel to it when the main characters who've had an unforgettable one-night stand together see each other again as doctor and patient in the most awkward way possible. You see, two people named Bren and Mason had the hottest sex possible but exchanged nothing more than their names. She ups and leaves and even though he tries to find her again, it's to no avail. He does, however, manage to get her flat on her back and in between her legs once again...as her OB-GYN doctor, one her boss recommended. She has no clue he's Dr. Bentley, and her use of the name Ashley Williams doesn't clue Mason in to her identity. This isn't a normal yearly check-up thing either. Nope, Bren needs an OB-GYN because she could be pregnant...by her unforgettable one-night stand!

I mentioned this book having a rom-com feel to it in the beginning, and how couldn't it considering the circumstances of Mason and Bren's reunion. The story does have, though, quite a bit of angst and it becomes to feel more like a heavier read than a rom-com as the story progresses. That isn't necessarily a bad thing because I do like me my angst. I also happened to like Mason, who was at a point in his life where he was no longer looking for hook-ups. The guy wanted to find and be with the woman he believed he could spend the rest of his life with because he truly believed in the idea of soulmates thanks to his parents's strong marriage. Bren, on the other hand, wasn't really looking for commitment or even more than a wham-bam-thank-you...erm...sir thing. She has her reasons, and they're not the kind that can be easily solved with a hug, not when it has to do with a painful loss.

There was a lot to like about the book. When the rom-com parts of it where there, they truly did bring a smile to my face. There were also moments in the story where the chemistry between Mason and Bren was clear and present and I found myself rooting for them. However, I confess that there were times that these two proved to be quite frustrating, though more Bren than Mason. There was a lot of back and forth and all this pussyfooting, especially on Bren's end. By the end, though, everything did work out and Kendall Ryan managed to get me to like Bren again. There were a couple of surprises, but for all intents and purposes, the story played out the way I expected it to. This series is my favorite of the author's, and I know there's at least one more novella in the offing, but with her shift to a new series, I am definitely going to miss Roommates. I'm giving four stars to The Soul Mate. ♥
