Review: Satin by K.C. Wells (A Material World #2)
Note: This ARC was provided by the author via Signal Boost Promotions in exchange for an honest review.
During an undercover stakeout at a club called Paradise, Detective Constable Joel Hunter is trying to appear as inconspicuous as possible when out walks the entertainment for the evening. Dressed in red satin and bearing the name Satin, the singer is both beautiful to look at and to listen to. Joel finds himself smitten by the woman and makes a point of returning more than once. When Satin decides to approach him, Joel's shocked to realize that Satin is actually a man whose name is Ross Dauntry. Being a female impersonator who sings helps Ross pay the bills, but dancing remains his first love and becoming part of a professional ballet troupe his dream. While Ross is gay, Joel is straight, so there shouldn't be anything wrong with the two of them hanging out as friends, right? But what Joel feels for Ross is nowhere near platonic. He'll need to figure out who he truly is and what he really wants.
When I first read Lace, I thought it was a one-and-done sort of thing, so I was surprised when I heard that K.C. Wells had a new series called A Material World and that Lace was the first book and that there was a second one already, Satin. Joel and Ross were an interesting pair, especially with the way their paths first crossed. I'm not sure I would count this as a GFY (gay for you) story since it appears Joel had certain inclinations, or at least enough so his partner had already noticed and wondered about him. Whether it's GFY or not doesn't really matter because the story did prove to be entertaining. The usual complications that arise from stories involving one character who isn't out in the open about his sexuality are present, but the main characters themselves, as well as the supporting cast, gave this enough of a unique vibe. All in all, Satin was a book I enjoyed and I look forward to book three. Four stars. ♥
