Review: Sweet Torment by Georgia Cates

Note: This ARC was provided by the author via Give Me Books Promotions in exchange for an honest review.

Sweet Torment is a novella from author Georgia Cates and, sadly, it isn't my favorite from her. This book is shorter than her usual fare and it had the feel of a lot of the insta-love, though they're more insta-lust, quickies around. Here, we have seventeen-year-old Claudia Laine Bliss and twenty-three-year-old Noel Abraham Windsor. She's a high school senior and he's recently gotten his master's degree in accounting. Claud was always the little girl who followed her big brother Owen and his two best friends--one of whom just happens to be Bram--growing up. After not seeing her for six months, Bram sees how much his best friend's sister has grown up. He wants her now but she's always wanted him, but is Bram ready to risk his friendship with Owen in order to have Claud--his little dove?

For such a short read, there was more than one trope at play--falling-for-your-best-friend's-sibling, friends-to-lovers (because Bram and Claud were independently friends as well), tutor-student, and age difference (though not necessarily a May-December romance). Whew! Keeping things simple could have helped not make the story feel so cluttered, but I also didn't connect with Bram and Claud nor did I really have any sort of thrill over their romance. I also think his calling her "bae" was cheesy. The elements you expect to find in an insta-love/insta-lust story were here, including the unprotected sex and subsequent pregnancies, and because this was Georgia Cates, I was expecting something more...something different. Unfortunately, I didn't. I'm giving Sweet Torment three stars.  ♥
