Review: Sight Unseen by Various Authors

Note: This ARC was provided by Open Ink Press in exchange for an honest review.

Sight Unseen is a multi-authored anthology that has a unique concept that involves five different authors but none of their names are immediately connected to any of the stories that are part of the book. In short, the authorship of each story is currently under wraps; readers will have to wait until September to find out who wrote what and if any of their guesses were correct. In my case, I confess that there was only one author among the five--J.A. Rock--whose work I'm familiar with, so I decided to forego the whole guessing game feature of this collection, concentrating instead on the stories and seeing which ones connected with me rather than connect writer to tale.

The five stories cover a variety of romance sub-genres--fantasy (Lost That Feeling), urban fantasy (A Clear View of You), motorcycle club (Free), rock star (Chariot of Desire), and science-fiction (The Heart is a Universe). A couple of the stories--Lost That Feeling and Chariot of Desire--weren't as heavy on the romance as I was expecting but that isn't necessarily something that turned me off to either of them since they were still fairly enjoyable reads, albeit the endings for both were rushed, almost as if trying to tie everything up even if the bow were loose. A Clear View of You sits in the middle of the pack, having been a good story with memorable elements of fantasy and romance.

My two favorites were Free and The Heart is a Universe, both in equal measure even though they were very different sub-genres. For such short reads, they never felt as if they were skimping on either story or character development, both giving readers style and substance in a limited number of pages. I love it when an author satisfies my romance reader needs without either overdoing it or leaving me shortchanged, and whoever the authors are behind these two particular reads deserve kudos. I give the aforementioned five stars apiece, A Clear View of You four stars, and the remaining two three stars, leading me to give Sight Unseen an average of four stars. ♥
