Bassist with Benefits is the second full-length novel and the third overall book in the Jenna Galicki-penned Bulletproof series. Moving on from the romance of Bulletproof's lead singer, Brandon Bullet, with Cameron Douglas, we now have a friends-to-lovers romance between the band's bassist and drummer, Jeremy Kagan and Alan Douglas, respectively. They've been best friends since they were teenagers and having achieved success as part of the world's biggest hard rock band, Jeremy and Alan are reaping the many rewards that come with it--including sharing men. The one thing they've never done is had sex with each other...until, the most memorable blow job Alan ever receives comes courtesy of Jeremy, a fact he only realized after the lights were turned on. Now, everything's awkward between the two best friends. Jeremy's been in love with Alan since they were eighteen, but Alan can't seem to wrap his head around what happened between the two of them. With tensions running high and their band now being filmed for a project, will Jeremy and Alan figure things out before everything falls apart?

This third in a series was a definite improvement from its predecessors. There was more of a story and you could really see how the relationship between Jeremy and Alan ebbed and flowed. Does it suffer from some of the same failings as The Undercover Rock Star and Branded? Well, yes. This one still felt too long, with unnecessary musings and flashbacks--which were, more often than not, difficult to distinguish from what was happening in the present--and it had really length sex scenes. But even as it stumbled at times, I did like that this wasn't the typical story of two best friends who had secret feelings for one another. In the case of Jeremy, yes, he had a thing for Alan for years; but in Alan's case, he never really saw Jeremy in a romantic light, so his being confused and hesitant about what was now happening between them made sense. I also liked the bit regarding one of Alan's past hookups and how that played into their relationship moving forward even more. A whole lot of steam, a twist of suspense, and a heap of sweet and sappy, Bassist with Benefits managed to surprise me in more ways than one. This gets four stars. ♥
