Review: Clap Back by Lani Lynn Vale (Carter Brothers #4)
Note: An advance reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author via Give Me Books Promotions.
With the set of Carter triplets getting their happily-ever-afters, Lani Lynn Vale is moving on to the first set of twins--there were three in all--Auden and Atlas. Auden's story, Clap Back, is the fourth novel in the Carter Brothers series, and Atlas's will follow in the fifth book, Rent Free, next month. Auden is paired with Maven Brumfield, the owner of Pie Hard and with whom this member of Dallas PD's SWAT is secretly smitten. Not that he believed he could do anything about said crush, given that Atlas had a thing for Maven. However, it seems that Auden misinterpreted his twin's frequent visits to Pie Hard, and when it becomes clear that Atlas isn't interested in Maven romantically, nothing can deter Auden from pursuing a relationship with the baking goddess of his dreams. Not even the fact that she just happens to be the daughter of the police chief; the same police chief who has made it crystal clear that he doesn't want anyone getting too close with Maven. But is Auden prepared to risk his stellar career alongside his heart this maiden named Maven?
I immensely enjoyed Maven and Auden's romance! These two just clicked in a way that was beyond any sort of physical attraction. She was fiercely independent, so his protective nature was something that needed some getting used to, what with most of her own family being more intrusive and underhanded. Naturally, Auden gets that protectiveness from his parents, and it's a trait he shares with the rest of his siblings, so they embrace Maven and warmly welcome her into the fold. That makes things interesting, given that Maven's father and step-brother are adamantly against her relationship with Auden. I confess that I couldn't fully grasp why they would be, especially her father, and their treatment of her bordered on abhorrent. Suffice it to say that the reasoning left me speechless. I'll leave it at that because I don't want to spoil the book for those who have yet to pick it up. I do look forward to seeing if the author does anything with that in the future. Clap Back gets 4.5 stars, and I can't wait for Atlas's book.
