Review: The Boyfriend Goal by Lauren Blakely (Love and Hockey #1)

Lauren Blakely is still very much in her hockey romance era, and with the release of The Boyfriend Goal, she kicks off her new Love and Hockey series. While Blakely's My Hockey Romance series featured polyamorous relationships, we've got conventional pairings in this latest series offering, or at least as far as I could tell from the blurbs of the first two novels. The series starter features the falling-for-my-sibling's-teammate trope, with Josie Winters and Wesley Bryant hooking up one night, exchanging only their first names. When she disappears the morning after, Wes knows he wants to see her again. Of course, he didn't quite realize that would happen sooner rather than later when it turns out that Josie is his new roommate. She isn't just any other roomie either; she's his teammate Christian Winters's younger sister! Can this hockey player for the San Francisco Sea Dogs and this librarian for the San Francisco Public Library write their own story book ending or could falling for each other lead to being sent to the penalty box for a not-so-happily-ever-after?

Talk about getting things off to a fantastic start! Josie and Wes's story was a treat, with that trademark Blakely combo of swoony romance, scintillating sexy times, and smart-alecky wit and humor. Having a sibling's teammate and a teammate's sibling falling for each other is a popular romance trope, and for good reason. The additional creative touch of having Josie turn out to be the person who was going to be rooming with Wes gave that whole close proximity thing that has me always thinking how long it would be before either main character would break. Of course, this whole setup came with its complications, and even though you know love will win out in the end, seeing Josie and Wes figure out how to go to that much coveted point made for some absolutely great reading. The Boyfriend Goal has set the bar high for the rest of the Love and Hockey series to come. 4.5 stars!
