Review: Promise Me Tomorrow by H. D'Agostino (Witness #3)

Promise Me Tomorrow is the third novel in the Witness series by bestselling author H. D'Agostino, and after having read all currently available books in the series one after the other, I must say that book three is my favorite. Jasen Stevenson used to have the kind of life other people envied, that is, until his older brother dragged him into his world and left him with no other choice but to do things that someone like him would never do. His role and his later refusal to do more for the drug dealer his brother owed money to led him to carry the burden of guilt that sits on his shoulders when it comes to murders of his beloved parents. He finally gets his chance at absolution when he volunteers to go undercover to bring down the man who had his parents killed, but will he lose his humanity and a chance at forever with the girl he loves when all's been said and done? Will Tiffany Warner still love him when she learns the kind of boy he was and that he may never be able to give her the kind of tomorrow that he knows someone like her deserves?
While the second book in the series ended in a cliffhanger for that particular couple, Devlin and Samantha Ford, this third book is about a totally different couple, Jase and Tiff. We do get a resolution to the whole cliffhanger situation, so no worries for those that were anxiously awaiting what would happen to Dev after his nth undercover operation and whether or not he and Sam would continue living their happily-ever-after. This story felt more like it was Jase's than Tiff's, and I didn't really have much of an issue with that since Jase is an interesting main character. Probably the only thing that I wish had happened was that there was more development on Tiff's end because we don't get too much of her back story and for someone to love Jase as much as she did, I would think she had a good history of her own to tell. I liked these two together, and while Jase held off for as long as he did on pursuing anything serious with Tiff, the heart wants what it wants and sometimes it takes the thought of losing that other person to get you going.
Jase's relationship with his older brother felt a bit unresolved and I would have wanted something more definitive, especially since it was his brother who was the catalyst for Jase's life changing when he was only sixteen. On the other hand, all other loose ends concerning Jase and Tiff and Dev and Sam were taken care of rather nicely. Yes, that means there was no cliffhanger waiting for either of these two couples. We are, however, introduced to a new character named Danielle, and based on that last chapter in the book, it appears that she isn't quite the stranger that Mason thinks she is. I'm already curious as to what will happen with their story, especially since Mason isn't an undercover cop like the first two male main characters. With three people from the Rusty Nail getting their stories, I wonder if maybe the series should have been called Rusty Nail instead of Witness. Hehe. Overall, this third novel was a good and satisfying read, and it can pretty much be read as a standalone. Promise Me Tomorrow garners four stars. ♥
