Review: Assumption by Aurora Rose Reynolds (Underground Kings #1)
Assumption is the series starter in Underground Kings, a romantic suspense series from bestselling author Aurora Rose Reynolds, and is about Autumn Freeman, who works at a strip club in Vegas while clocking in the required number of hours at a local hospital for her to become a registered nurse, and Kenton Mayson, a security specialist who lives in Tennessee. After Autumn becomes the sole witness of five murders at the strip club, her closest friend there makes her head on down to Tennessee to stay with Kenton, who is his best friend and is someone he believes can give Autumn the protection she needs from the people behind the murders. When Kenton makes one ill-informed assumption too many, Autumn decides that he really is the jerk that she first believed him to be. But the one thing that neither needs to assume is whether or not the attraction they feel is mutual, an attraction that's leading to something far more than they thought possible. Will they survive whatever's headed their way so they can have a future?
The title of this book is perfect for both Kenton and Autumn because they do start of their rocky living situation with wrong assumptions about one another, although Kenton seems to have more of a nasty habit of making assumptions compared to Autumn. He's every bit an alpha male, and Autumn's the first woman to ever make him feel at a loss as to what to do with her. She's feisty and refuses to be coddles by Kenton, but every instinct he has wants to protect her, even during the times she tries to avoid him. Theirs is a pairing that was bound to happen, and they just fit so well together. Not because her life is at risk and he can protect her, but it's their having found home with one another that makes them so. There's a lot of sexual tension between them on a regular basis, but they also engage tons of lighthearted or snarky banter, making their relationship as entertaining as ever as it evolves. They balance each other out, and his being able to give Autumn that sense of family that was always missing makes Kenton a very swoony hero.
Love story aside, the suspense parts of the book deserve props as well. After all, let's not forget that the main reason Autumn is in Tennessee is because she's the prime witness to a crime that led to five deaths in the club where she worked. Finding out who was behind those deaths and who is now after Autumn leads to an even bigger mess because of the players involved. This story arc extends throughout the three currently available books, and while it may not be overly prominent at all times, when it makes its presence felt, the characters in the books are forced to take drastic measures. The tension within the story--sexual and otherwise--is felt throughout, sucking you in and making you anxious trying to figure out when the bad guys are going to strike and just how far they're willing to take matters. This being my first ever Aurora Rose Reynolds read, plus the fact that this is a spin-off series, I'm definitely interested in going through her back list to see what I've missed. Assumption is a really great first in a series. Five stars! ♥
