Review: Crash Into Me by Tracy Wolff (Shaken Dirty #1)

Crash Into Me is the first novel in bestselling author Tracy Wolff's rock star romance series, Shaken Dirty, which is about the five members of a rock band by the same name. This was my first Tracy Wolff read and after having finished it, I totally get why there are Shaken Dirty groupies on Goodreads and elsewhere. Book one is about the Shaken Dirty's lead singer, twenty-nine-year-old Ryder Montgomery, and twenty-three-year-old aspiring chef Jamison Matthews, who also happens to be the younger sister of the group's guitarist and Ryder's best friend. Given the rock star treatment, this series starter takes the falling-for-your-best-friend's-sibling trope to a different level. It's surprisingly slow burn with hot results that make the wait for Ryder and Jamison to get their act together--well, more Ryder than Jamison--oh-so-worth it!

Many of us know what it's like to have a crush on an older sibling's friend, but add in the complication of said friend being part of the world's hottest band, and chances are Jamison's crush won't take note of her presence. But notice her he did, and when Ryder realizes that the young woman he was hoping to seduce is the very girl he's considered one of his closest friends and the same one that he's always been protective of, thinking her like his own little sister, and the feelings of guilt weigh on him. Ryder hasn't been in a relationship since the last one ended in tragic circumstances, and the role he played in that tragedy has been haunting him for far too long, a sad fact everyone in the band and Jamison are aware of. But Jamison could be the one to inspire him to see past the darkness of his heartache and have a bright future with her.

Just when you think that the story was going to go down the same path as other stories before it, Tracy Wolff changed lanes and took a completely unexpected turn. When I said this was a slow burn romance, that's what it felt like to me, and I more than appreciated that because it gave the story something different compared to those that fall under the same sub-genre. Ryder isn't some angst-y rocker looking for some street cred so that his bad boy persona makes the band more money and garners them a larger following. He, along with most of the other members of Shaken Dirty, are carrying with them a lot of baggage thanks to their less than desirable childhoods, and I liked how Jamison was a source of support for him and the rest of the band. Crash Into Me was a series starter that rocked me to the core. Five stars. ♥
