Review: Bait & Switch by Kendall Ryan (Alphas Undone #1)
Note: This ARC was provided by InkSlinger PR in exchange for an honest review.
Bait & Switch is the first book in the Alphas Undone series by bestselling author Kendall Ryan and is my first ever read from the author. This was an unconventional love story involving former Navy SEAL turned private security specialist Nolan Maxwell and the two very different women in his life--nurse and roommate Daniella and animal shelter employee Lacey. Both women are more than aware of the presence of the other in Nolan's life, and while they claim to be accepting of the circumstances, the closer Nolan becomes to Lacey, the more complicated everything becomes in his non-relationship with Daniella. He doesn't want to be put in a position of having to choose between them, but when push comes to shove, will he ever be able to admit that he actually beginning do the one thing he swore he never would--fall in love?
For those of you who consider cheating a no-go, let me just put this out there: there is NO cheating that goes on in this book, unless you count one particular moment in the story. Also, is it still considered cheating if all parties are aware of one another? Nolan's non-relationships with both Lacey and Daniella are complex, but he doesn't lie to either woman and doesn't make a secret of his seeing Lacey or his friends with benefits arrangement with Daniella. Does this make Nolan somewhat of a jerk? Maybe. It's like having his cake and eating it too, but again, both women knowingly agree to what's going on, so that seriously needs to be taken into context, and like I mentioned earlier, there's no actual cheating that goes on. Sound complicated? I don't want to get into specifics because it'll spoil the book for you. Just read it.
Aside from the complicated "love" triangle that goes on, there's also a bit of suspense going on involving Lacey, who isn't totally upfront about her past, which leads to the twist that happens in the latter half of the book. I figured out who she was and what she was hiding from Nolan early on, but that take away from my enjoyment of the story. Surprisingly, my favorite character wasn't either of the main characters; it was Greyson Archer, Nolan's fellow security specialist and also a former Navy SEAL. The advice he gives Nolan is spot-on, but by the end of the book, you feel for the guy. I know that his story is up next in the series and I was already looking forward to it, but doubly so after I read the blurb included in this series starter. Overall, Bait & Switch was something different in a good way. Book one in Alphas Undone gets four stars. ♥
