Review: Into the Fury by Kat Martin (BOSS Inc. #1)

Into the Fury is the first novel in author Kat Martin's newest romantic suspense series, BOSS Inc., which is a spin-off of The Brodies of Alaska series, which was in itself a spin-off of The Raines of Wind Canyon series. This was a really good series starter that introduced readers to characters from the preceding series as well as characters that are sure to have their own stories told as this new series continues while keeping most of the focus on the love story between private investigator and bodyguard Ethan Brodie and model and veterinary student Valerie Hartman, who uses the name Valentine Hart as part of her unexpected public persona. Of course, elements of suspense and mystery are at a high, what with someone setting their sights on Val and her fellow models, but could they have more than one perpetrator at large?

I thoroughly enjoyed both the romance and the mystery suspense parts of this book, and more than appreciated how Val and Ethan's relationship developed over time, albeit some may still consider it rather short. With both of them being in such a high-stress situation and in such close proximity to one another, I wasn't all that surprised that their emotions were at an all-time high. Ethan doesn't trust women, especially those he considers vapid, overly privileged, and relying solely on their physical attributes, due in large part to his failed relationship with the mother of his three-year-old daughter Hannah. He takes one look at Valentine Hart and assumes what he considers the worst about her, but while he may have noticed Valentine Hart, it's Valerie Hartman that he begins to fall for, proving there's more to this woman.

There were a couple of twists in the story, and I can readily admit that the person I had originally pegged as the bad guy didn't exactly turn out to be dud, but it proved to be far more complicated than I actually anticipated! There's also a lot of action, which I always look forward to in books that fall under this genre, delivering thrills. Aside from Val and Ethan, we also get bits and pieces of Dirk Reynolds and Megan O'Brien's affair as well, the events between them setting the stage quite nicely for the next book in the series, Into the Whirlwind, which focuses on them. Another I liked about the book was Ethan's role as a father to his young daughter, giving him an additional and endearing facet to his personality. Into the Fury was my first ever Kat Martin read, but it definitely won't be the last. I'm giving this series starter 4.5 stars. ♥
