Review: Becoming Somebody by H. D'Agostino (Witness #2)

Becoming Somebody is the sequel to Being Nobody in author H. D'Agostino's Witness series. The story picks up immediately after the events in the first book by way of the prologue, but then skips ahead four years in the first chapter. Before I get into the nitty-gritty of my review, I'm going to go ahead and warn you that you need to have already read the first book if you're going to read my review. If you haven't read it, please don't proceed with reading this review, because I'm going to be mentioning a name or two that may end up spoiling the first book for you if you're planning on reading it. Feel free to come back and read whatever I have to say when you're done with either the first book or both the first and second books. I do try to keep my reviews spoiler-free, but in the case of this book, 100% spoiler-free is not entirely possible.

Samantha Connelly fell in love with the same person she fell in love with at seventeen but was left with no choice yet again but to move and change her name. When she gets to Vegas, she becomes Jennifer, and while there, she experiences more than one life-altering change. She pleaded with Devlin Ford to come with her, but Dev had his own responsibilities as a police officer to take care of, and both time and distance separate them. Sam's life moves forward, and the fact that she contemplates being with another man a week after she and Dev separate had me raising my eyebrow. The first chapter held a bit of a surprise, but nothing shocked me more than how Sam treated Andrew Sommers, the man she had been living with in Vegas. I found it rather cold and reprehensible, even if she never really loved Andy the way she loved Dev.

Then there's the reunion with Dev. She made certain life choices because she wanted the opportunity to be with Dev again, and yet she was running hot and cold with the guy. She tried to make him feel terrible for his decision to stay in Chicago to continue working undercover, but she was keeping yet another secret from him. This from a woman who wanted honesty. There wasn't much going on other than Sam's new secret and Dev's still being an undercover cop, so it felt as if some things were dragged out much longer than necessary. I feel, had both books been condensed into one novel, it would have worked out better, but hey, that's just my opinion. And the ending was yet another cliffhanger, but why end it on a cliffhanger when the third book is about a different couple? It made no sense. Three stars for Becoming Somebody. ♥

Four years' worth of meaningless sexual encounters flash through my head as I break the kiss and slide down his body again. All those guys I hooked up with in the past...they're a blur.
