Review: "Stay with Me" by Samantha Chase (The Montgomery Brothers #3)

William Montgomery has successfully matched his two younger sons with the women they're spending the rest of their lives with. They're both happy and content, but William still has one more son, his eldest, and trying to find him the woman who will show him that work isn't everything will be easier said than done. Then he meets up with his best friend Arthur Micelli and while he jokes about Art's daughter and William's son getting together, William realizes that Art's failing health needs to take precedence to matchmaking.

Mackenzie "Mac" Montgomery has always put family and business before anything else. His father nags him about spending way too much time in the office but Mac knows that to continue to be successful, he needs to make sure all is well with the company. He refuses to be the next "victim" of his father's matchmaking but when he's tasked to spend time with Art Micelli's now grown-up daughter, he's not sure if he can resist giving in to his feelings, regardless of whether this is part of his father's interference or not.

Gina Micelli is hesitant about being back in North Carolina, especially since she still resents her father not fighting for her to stay with him after the divorce. It's been more than a decade since she was last with the Montgomerys, but they've welcomed her to their home and treat her like family. One look at the oldest Montgomery son and Gina knows that her childhood crush on him is back in full force, not that it really went away in the first place. She needs a distraction from her father's illness and Mac could provide it.

Mac and Gina are very much aware of the fact that Gina's father is dying and that she will, at the end of it all, return to California. But what was meant to be temporary is turning out to be something more for both of them, and while Gina wants Mac to ask her to stay, Mac doesn't want to be like every other person in Gina's life, dictating upon her what he thinks she should do. Will it take some interference on the part of the Montgomerys to save this pairing or will fate play its role and deliver them a happily ever after?

Stay with Me is the third novel in Samantha Chase's The Montgomery Brothers series and is my favorite among the three so far. This one tugged at my heartstrings, what with the story of a father and daughter reconciling and trying to make up for lost time, even as the time they have left is very limited. That scene in the hospital with Mac encouraging Gina to say anything and everything she's ever wanted to say to her father had me teary-eyed. That Mac was there when Gina needed him most was so sigh-worthy. ♥

I understood the conflict that Mac was feeling. He wanted to do the responsible things, not just because it was what was expected of him but because that was the kind of person he was. Being with Gina gave him a sense of balance that he needed in his life. Their love story wasn't so much about William Montgomery's matchmaking, though he did play a role in it, but more of Mac and Gina deciding that they did have choices that were available to them. I really liked Stay with Me and happily give it four out of five stars. ♥
