Review: The Sweet Spot by Layla Reyne (Table for Two #5)

Note: An advance reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author.

The Sweet Spot is the fifth book in the Table for Two series from Layla Reyne, and while there are ties to the other releases, each one can still be read as a standalone, meaning you can go ahead and dive into this new one without have previously read anything prior. This is a friends-with-benefits queer romance featuring Colby Clarke, a plus-sized pastry chef working at Chess, and Ford Rafferty, a former chef before making the move to Martha's Vineyard to become manager of the same restaurant. The two have been secretly hooking up ever since New Year's Eve, with both agreeing that there are absolutely no strings attached, choosing to keep things platonic outside of the bedroom--or wherever else they happen to get down and dirty. So why is everything starting to feel complicated, with feelings that are not-so-platonic?

Talk about an aptly titled novella! Yes, there's some steam here, and the title is obviously a play on the fact that Colby is a pastry chef, but I loved seeing the honest-to-goodness friendship that existed between her and Ford. They weren't necessarily looking for anything more than what was on the table, pun unintended, but the heart wants what it wants, and when that happens, resistance is, indeed, futile. My favorite thing about this book, however, is the slow burn. Yup, you read that right. It's slow burn AND a novella, and boy, oh boy, did Layla Reyne do it well. The cameos from familiar "faces" from the series felt like sprinkles on top of an already delicious dessert. Overall, The Sweet Spot delivers a 4.5-star read.
