Review: Careless by Carrie Ann Ryan (Ashford Creek #0.5)

Note: An advance reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author.

Bestselling author Carrie Ann Ryan has a new series featuring a newish family for readers to fall in love with--the Ashfords! Yes, those Ashfords, who were introduced in Pieces of Me, the ninth book in the Wilder Brothers series, with Briar Ashford, the youngest sister, finding love with Gabriel WIlder. Careless serves as the introduction to the rest of the Ashford siblings and the town they live in, Ashford Creek, which is also the title of the series. Callum is the oldest among seven siblings, and while he may have only played professional football for a couple of years, it's helped him create Ashford Brews, the brewery he owns in town. He's got his fair share of secrets, one of which is his attraction to his best friend's sister, Felicity Carter. At twenty-one, she's a decade his junior, and along with his friendship with her brother, there's just no way Callum can act on his feelings for her, no matter how much she wants him to.

I love how Carrie Ann Ryan gives just enough in her prequels to entice her readers to want to wait a wee bit longer for the full story. Callum and Felicity were giving falling-for-your-best-friend's-sibling, small town, age gap feels, and everything about him had me wondering what he was keeping under wraps from those closest to him. Felicity has had a crush on Callum for a good, long while, but she has no idea he's got a thing for her as well. Naturally, there's more to it than the age difference and her brother being Callum's best friend, but everything will be revealed early next year when the full-length series starter is released. That ending makes me think that Callum was anything but careless with his feelings for Felicity; if anything, he was being extremely careful. Let's see what happens in Legacy. Four stars go to Careless.
