Review: Burning for Alexander by Lucy Lennox (Made Marian Legacy #2)
Note: An advance reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author.
Burning for Alexander is the second novel in the Made Marian Legacy series from Lucy Lennox, and if you've been read the series starter, Rescuing Dr. Marian, plus Hashtag Holiday, a holiday romance in the same literary universe but with non-Marian main characters, then it isn't really a secret who this new release is about. There's no love lost between Alexander Marian and Judd Kincaid, twenty-seven-year-old restaurateur of Timber and forty-year-old fire chief, respectively. Neither were born and bred in Legacy, Montana, with Alex growing up on a vineyard in California and Judd hailing from Philadelphia after time spent in the military. Chief Kincaid is insistent that random safety inspections be made at Timber, much to Alex's dismay, and the former makes it clear that his opinion of the latter isn't all that great. What isn't immediately obvious is that Judd is burning--not with anger, but with something else entirely for Alex. If these two don't give in to their scorching hot attraction, it could lead to a backdraft. If they do, their hearts may be burnt beyond recognition or ignite a firestorm that won't die. Could secrets douse the fire?
I love the friends-to-lovers trope, but I must admit that enemies-to-lovers romances take the cake. Maybe it's all that tension, and the realization that there's some truth to the saying that the line between love and hate is a thin one. When done well, this trope is my catnip, and Lucy Lennox delivers the story of two men who can barely tolerate each other, yet they've got this underlying sizzle of awareness whenever they happen to be in the same space. Add to that a bit of history between them, which I'm not really going to get into in this review since we're trying to not to be all spoilery. With that being said, it honestly won't be all that difficult to figure what that history is. Speaking of which, I appreciated how references to it were done, making the presentation more creative than the usual chapter-long flashbacks or snippets interspersed in chapters. I seriously wanted to Alex and Judd to figure themselves out, but there was one particular point in the book, where my I empathized for both of them. Naturally, everything is rectified and they get their happily-ever-after, which was well worth the wait. Five stars for Burning for Alexander!
