Review: Mr. Swoony by Piper Rayne (The Nest #3)
Note: An advance reader copy (ARC) was provided by the authors via Valentine PR.
With how things ended in the epilogue of Mr. Broody, I was eager to see what led to Conor Nilsen stopping the wedding of a woman none of his closest friends, teammates, and sister seemingly knew had as intense a connection to him whatsoever. Well, everything prior to that nuptial-stopping moment and its aftermath plays out in Mr. Swoony, the third novel in writing duo Piper Rayne's The Nest hockey romance series. Just like the first two books in the series, this can be read as a standalone, but if you've been following the series, then you know that Conor is the older brother of Kyleigh, whose own happily-ever-after with Rowan Landry is chronicled in the series starter, Mr. Heartbreaker. The thirty-year-old goalie for the Chicago Falcons considers himself a "fixer", so when he notices a bride-to-be not into her bachelorette party as much you would expect one to be, he can't help but approach her. Neither Conor nor twenty-nine-year-old Eloise Corbin were prepared for that to lead to a few enlightening hours together and connection that they'd never experienced with anyone else before. But is that enough for Conor and Eloise to decide to become roommates and friends. For now. Maybe. Talk about complicated!
There were countless moments in the book where our main male character, indeed, lived up to the title of book. Conor had a way about him that made it easy to see why Eloise was as drawn to him as she was. I enjoyed their banter, and it was clear that they had a whole lot of chemistry. It was also true that he was a fixer, almost to the point that he had a savior complex that had him making decisions and choices that he felt were what would be best for Eloise. Here's the thing, though--Eloise was not some damsel in distress. If anything, she was highly independent and could pretty much fight her own battles. So yes, there were moments where Conor went a wee bit too far with his "fixing", and some groveling was required afterwards. But the guy's heart was in the right place, and I appreciated how much he truly cared about Eloise. Theirs was a highly entertaining story, and I loved how everything finally fell into place once they got out of their own way. Mr. Swoony receives 4.5 stars, but I would like to note that with the way things ended here, I am already impatiently awaiting Tweetie's story in the fourth The Nest book!
