Review: Hills of Shivers and Shadows by Pam Godwin (Frozen Fate #1)

Note: An advance reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author.

If you've never read anything by Pam Godwin, then dare I say that you're missing out. She's one of those rare authors known for her dark romances who's on a completely different plane. This new novel of hers? It is above and beyond anything that she's written so far--and I'm saying that as someone who has read every single book she has published. Dark romances are not my go-to, but that doesn't mean I've never read them. It's more of me being super picky about which one I'll decide to spend my time with. When it comes to Godwin, however, I won't even read the blurb; I'll just dive right on. Why would someone like me, who often prefers lighthearted romance (although I'm a sucker for angsty ones, too!), go blindly into a read on the opposite side of the romance spectrum? Because I trust Godwin's storytelling, and as dark as it can get--and this newest one is a doozy!--I know the light at the end of the tunnel will be so worth it.

Hills of Shivers and Shadows is not only the latest release from Pam Godwin, but it also happens to be the first in her new trilogy, Frozen Fate. Yes, that basically means that the books one and two end in cliffhangers, so be prepared to be left a wee bit frustrated in all the best ways possible. Also, this series starter feels darker, if that were even possible, and heavier than Godwin's usual fare, which is saying something. Possible triggers are listed on the author's website, which I think are a good idea to check out because then, at the very least, potential readers are aware and can consider themselves forewarned.

I don't want to go into detail because twenty-eight-year-old Frankie Novak's journey is best experienced as she's going through each hurdle and ordeal alongside her. Her abduction, courtesy of Denver Strakh (48) is harrowing, and being thrown into the world he and his boys, Leonid (30), Kodiak (25), and Wolfson (23) belong to can only be described as a living nightmare. Suffice it to say that if you're a reader whose sensibilities are easily offended, then may I humbly suggest that you not read this book. This is NOT a sugary sweet story of love, lust, and happily-ever-afters. There were moments that had filled me with apprehension and wariness, and quite a few that had me questioning my own sanity for refusing to put this book down. That's the thing: I could not NOT finish this, even knowing there was a cliffhanger. Now, I shall have to wait (im)patiently to see what fate awaits Frankie and her feral men. Five-plus stars.
