Review: To Love a Texas Ranger by Linda Broday (Men of Legend #1)

To Love a Texas Ranger is the first novel in the Men of Legend series from bestselling author Linda Broday. This also happens to be my first read by the author and while I do read historical romances, they're usually the kinds that have Regency and Victorian settings. I can't recall the last time I read a historical western romance, so I was excited to read this first in a new series and while it's a lengthy read, it's one that was worth the time I put into it. It also worked very well as a series starter because we get a well-written love story focusing on one Legend brother while introducing us to the two others that will have their own stories told as the series progresses. The three brothers are different--the youngest is a Texas Ranger, the middle a cowboy heading the family ranch, and the eldest an outlaw with a bounty on his head--but the dynamic among them along with the one they have with their father makes for a very interesting aspect of this first book, and I'm hoping we'll get to see it evolve even further in the next books.

Sam Legend is proud Texas Ranger, his reputation preceding him on both sides of the law. He's captured and brought many a wanted man to justice, but there's one in particular who always seems to be a step ahead of him--Luke Hawkins. He's committed enough robberies to give him the kind of notoriety that would make him a prize catch for any lawman, and with as many encounters as they've had, Sam intends to be the lawman that brings him in. But then Sam's life changes when after a near-fatal incident with a gang of outlaws. Forced into recuperating back on his family's property, Lone Star, Sam makes the journey home to his father and brother. He's forced to make alterations to his plan, however, when Sierra Hunt lands on his lap while on the run from a criminal and his henchmen. He finds a partner to help him keep Sierra safe, but is in for the surprise of his life when he discovers who he actually is and his connection to Sam. Forced to rethink his life, Sierra's place in it, and family secrets, will Sam live up to being a Legend?

This was a story about falling in love and taking risks. Sam had his life planned out and it was all about continuing on being the best Texas Ranger he could be. When he meets both Luke Hawkins and Sierra Hunt, everything changes. He feels a kinship with Luke but needs to reconcile the fact that Luke is an outlaw and that it's Sam's job to arrest him with the growing knowledge that there's more to the man than being an outlaw. With as far as his feelings for Sierra are concerned, he falls for the young woman but doesn't deem himself worthy of her affections because she should be with someone who can provide her with the stable life she deserves. However, I loved that Sierra was this determined heroine who may have had her fears and insecurities, but learned to battle through them as the story went on. As much as this book was about romantic love, it was also about love for family, and the Legends are certainly a family that have more worthwhile stories to be shared. To Love a Texas Ranger was a highly satisfying five-star read. ♥
