Review: Behind the Wall by Jane Harvey-Berrick (Hot for Teacher)

Note: This ARC was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.

He was just Prisoner 97813 and he certainly doesn't leave the most positive of impressions on the new teacher working in Nottoway Correctional Center, but Dane Garrett does, indeed make an impression on Ella Newsome. He looks at her as if he would rather be anywhere else but in her classroom and she's already pegged him as nothing more than a cocksure criminal used to getting any and every woman he wants and doing unspeakable things that led him to prison. But as soon as she reads his very first paper, Ella realizes that there's more to the man than she once thought, and the more time she spends with him, the more she stops looking them as teacher and student and starts seeing them as woman and man. Will she be able to keep her feelings in check, or will they cross the line once it's clear that he wants her as well?

Written by Jane Harvey-Berrick, Behind the Wall is one of the short stories in the multi-authored Hot for Teacher anthology and it takes place within the walls of corrections facility. I've already read a number of the author's work in the past, so I'm more than aware of how great of a writer she is, but she proves with this short story that she only needs a few pages to tell a tale of love and passion and how acceptance can indeed change the life of one person. I was drawn to both Ella and Dane, aka Miss Newsome and Garrett, and became quite invested in their happily-ever-after. They could have simply waited until Dane in prison was up, but this Jane Harvey-Berrick we're talking about here, so of course, it's not going to be your run-of-the-mill story! Behind the Wall is about the second chances life gives us and grabbing them. Five stars. ♥
