Review: Random & Rare by Cat Porter (Lock & Key #2)

Random & Rare is the sequel to author Cat Porter's Lock & Key, both books part of the contemporary romance series Lock & Key. Again, I must give credit where it rightfully due. It was impossible not to want to know more about Jake Pence, aka Dig Quillen, but Cat Porter put her own creatively unique touch and took things up a notch by letting Dig share his story in his voice. In the first book, we had both Grace Quillen's and Lock LeBeau's points of view; here, we have the past told to us by Dig, and the present is narrated by Grace. Dig's presence looms larger than ever in this second book, and I loved every bit of it. His shared love story with Grace is a very difficult one to beat and to simply put it in the back burner would have been okay, but to fully understand the kind of man Dig. We already know how much he changed Grace's world before their story came to a painful and tragic end, but now, we learn just how Grace changed his world, and see that Dig will always be part of Grace's story, regardless of years passed.

The first part of the book is told from Dig's perspective, and a lot of the things that happen here will be familiar to those who have already read the first book, as well as new things that provide answers to the questions that popped up while reading its predecessor. Because of this, the story may not flow with seamless continuity, but I didn't really have a problem with it since most of them are already scenes I knew because of book one. The new scenes show a deeper Dig, one whose past was not easy, but he somehow found redemption with his brothers in the One-Eyed Jacks and with his old lady, Grace, whom he nicknamed Wildflower. When we get to the second part of the book, which is told from Grace's viewpoint, we see her at her most vulnerable, and it's clear that Dig's death is something that she continues to deal with, even after having fallen in love and becoming Mrs. Flies as Eagles. There's also a full circle moment that left my heart squeezing painfully in my chest, realizing how much Grace lost after Dig was murdered.

We're introduced to a new character named Jill Loughlin, and the role she plays in the lives of both Grace and Dig is a very significant one. This also lays the groundwork for the third book, Iron & Bone, which is Jill's story and her own shot at happily-ever-after with Boner Giddon, Dig's best friend and one of Grace and Lock's closest friends. We also see the memorable supporting characters from the first book, and to see how they were fifteen or sixteen years prior was interesting, especially when you see how far they've come while somehow still reaming somewhat the same. Now, I'm going to suggest that you read the books in order, not only for any back story that you may be looking for, but because Grace's experiences are different from Dig's, but they shared their lives with one another for several years, and to fully enjoy what happens in Random & Rare, it's best you check out the first one. The Lock & Key series is quickly becoming a favorite, and if you're a fan of MC romances, this five-star sequel is a book worth checking out. ♥
