Review: Pucked by Helena Hunting (Pucked #1)

I set her down in front of the lockers and she shoves her hips into mine. "Ow!"

"Cup."

She feels around between us. "Of course, good idea. Protect your snuffie."

"My what?"

"Your snuffie. Your cock."

"Huh?"

"You know. Like Snuffleupagus."

Don't you love it when the first books in a series go on sale right before you're about the read and review the latest one to be released? That's happened to be a couple of times already the past couple of weeks or so, and this third time continues to be a charm! Yup, I've done yet another back-to-back-to-back read within a series, this most recent one being Helena Hunting's popular Pucked romantic comedy series, which is about NHL players for the Chicago Blackhawks and the women they find themselves entangled with. The first book, which shares the same title as the series, is a rip-roaring laugh fest, at times giving us cheeky but most of the time in-your-face, dirty humor, and introduces readers to a cast of characters who promise an uncensored and unedited but always entertaining view as they stumble and fumble their way to happily-ever-after. It was a bit of a slow start for me, but once I reached this one particular part that left me laughing to the point of tears, I was all in when it came to the love story of Violet Hall and Alex Waters.

Violet is twenty-two and works a junior accountant sports financial management public relations firm and lives in the pool house on her parents' property. Her stepbrother is a player for the Chicago Blackhawks and seeing how much of a manwhore he is and with her own previous experience with a minor leaguer who broke her heart by cheating on her, she believes that all hockey players are players off the ice as well. So, when she meets Alex Waters--whose reputation was nearly as whore-ish as her stepbrother's--she thinks a one-time thing shouldn't be too terrible of an idea. Except he doesn't act like a player. Alex is sweet and romantic and often seems anxious and nervous about his expressions of affection, afraid of Violet's reception to them. She's got absolutely no filter and can often be as obnoxious as her stepbrother, but there's something about her that grows on you, and just like Alex, it was difficult to resist her after a while. They fall in love, but in a sport where perception can make or break your career, will they end up pucked?

This book came along at just the right time. I needed a story that wasn't just going to put a smile. I wanted something that would inspire a laugh out of me, and this one had me laughing and snorting. Yes, the humor was at times irreverent and there were a lot of genital-related jokes and commentary, but sometimes that's exactly what the occasion calls for. To be honest, if Violet were a friend of mine in real life, I'd probably be cringing over in embarrassment with the stuff that came out of her mouth half the time, but she is who she is and she doesn't make apologies for it, and that's certainly something to be admired and it would make for a refreshing change, especially if we've got one bullshitter too many in our lives. Aside from one major misstep, one that he made up for with a grand gesture, Alex is top book boyfriend material. I liked Buck Butterson, Violet's stepbrother, who may have been a manwhore but he was protective of Violet. Pucked was the five-plus-starred beginning of my series hangover this weekend. ♥
