Review: Iron & Bone by Cat Porter (Lock & Key #3)

Note: This ARC was provided by Sassy Savvy Fabulous PR in exchange for an honest review.

"You're always ready to defend me, protect me, always ready to put yourself on the line for who you love. No hesitation, ever. You live what you feel. You feel what you live, and you take no prisoners. It's a beautiful, powerful thing, and I'm in awe of you. You helped me see that I can bear the weight of an iron sword that I have to use to protect myself, to protect my child, to protect you. You gave me that."

Iron & Bone is the third and latest released in the popular Lock & Key series created by author Cat Porter, and having been an integral supporting character in the past two books, Boner Giddon, finally gets his shot at a happy ending, one he could share with Jill Loughlin. Boner has always been a mystery, and now, fans of the series get to see parts of him that he's kept for years. He's never been in any sort of committed relationship nor has he ever even been mildly curious about it. But Jill is now ordinary woman, and while the age difference between--she's thirty-two and he's thirteen years older than her--them is somewhat of a niggling point, there are people who have greater issues with both of them, leading to plots of revenge and retaliation against them. Throw in characters we've gotten to meet over the past couple of books as well as a handful of new ones--albeit, several are from a rival biker group--especially Jill's young daughter who soon after meeting Boner, ends up nicknamed Bo, and book three will happily satisfy your MC loving self.

What is with the men in this series?! They may appear to be all alpha--which could very well describe quite a few book boyfriends--but they've got huge hearts and are highly protective of those who matter most to them. When Boner and Jill meet, it's when she's still a young teenager. You'll have to read the second book, Random & Rare, so that you find out the back story leading up to their paths crossing now that she's an adult. For so long, Jill was floating aimlessly by, but with Boner, she's learned that the saying "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger," is true. Even though he wants to be with Jill, he doesn't see himself worthy of her. Boner's past is one he rarely shares with other people, but once the cat is out of the bag, so to speak, his past changes from idyllic while his mother was alive to one that scarred him--literally and figuratively--is a sad one. We even get to learn how Santiago Arana and Jake Pence initially met and what cemented the friendship and lifelong bromance even after they evolve into Boner Giddon and Dig Quillen.

I liked Jill and Boner, and seeing their relationship transition from barely speaking to one another (not out of dislike though!), to becoming friends and then much more was part of what made this third book in the series a highly satisfying one. With a scheming ex-boyfriend and a jilted ex-hook-up, things promise to become heated, but add to that Boner's past with the girl he loved years before Jill came along, and it results in one emotional roller coaster ride of a read. Because Jill's current state is tied to Lock and Grace Flies as Eagles, they're still very much a part of this story, although not as prominent as one would expect. Butler, whose real name was never mentioned in any of the three books (but if it was and I simply missed it, please let me know via comment!), is back and can I just say that I saw need the fourth book in the series, Blood & Rust, to finally be about him! And a quick side note: the poetry included in this book was beautiful and touching and one of the best elements included. Iron & Bone is five-plus-starred third book. ♥
