Review: Because the Night by Kylie Scott

Note: An advance reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author.

Kylie Scott is one of those authors who doesn't seem to like resting on her laurels because she's been taking stabs (pun totally intended) at off-the-wall tropes and story lines and refuses to stake (see what I did there?) her reputation on "same old same old." All that being said, Scott remains to be all about the romance, and she delivers that once again with a bit of a paranormal touch via her latest standalone. Because the Night is a vampire romance featuring a woman named Skye Carter who inadvertently awakens a vampire while going through a stately home in the Hollywood Hills. She didn't believe vampires were real and she has no clue who Lucas Thorn is, but she sure as heck wasn't too happy about him sinking his teeth into her and, well, killing her. Now, Skye's compelled (hint, hint) to introduce a world that's progressed and developed over the seventy years Lucas has been snoozing--all while she dives in fangs first into his realm. Should she give her heart to a man who takes them at will...literally?

If I had to choose the thing I liked most about this book, it would have to be the female main character. Skye was independent and sassy, and she sure as heck was NOT hesitant to speak her mind. So, imagine what happens when the male main character just happens to be a vampire who has no clue how far women--and most everything else in the world--have come in the seven decades he has spent hibernating. Obviously, Lucas had never come across a woman quite like Skye, and while he absolutely needed to be clued in when it came to consent, the vamp(ire) did make concessions over time. The supporting cast of characters were highly entertaining--shout out to Henry and Benedict--as well, and I wouldn't mind if Kylie Scott decided to write more about this world she's created. Because the Night was a fast-paced, witty, and engaging read, and I can't wait to see what Scott gives readers next. Four stars!
