Review: Dangerous Ties by J.L. Beck (Ties #1)

Dangerous Ties is the first book in the Ties series from author J.L. Beck and it turned out to be way shorter than I was expecting, not that I'm complaining, because it did a good job in enticing me with that mix of dark erotic romance and suspense thriller. It ends in an evil cliffhanger--argh!--but it does set things up quite nicely for whatever is up next in the story. I'm curious and looking forward to finding out more about Grayson and Ellie. I have a few theories going on in my head as to what happened prior to the cliffhanger ending, as well as what may happen next, and I so cannot wait to find out if I'm right or wrong!
Killing is what Grayson does and he's one of the very best at it. When he sets his sights on Ellie while at a club, he knows he must have her. But things go awry really quickly, leading Grayson to do things that someone as trained as him would never have done before. Ellie fascinates him, and that fascination is mutual, morbid as it may seem, especially after Ellie realizes what kind of man Grayson is. There's this sizzling connection between the two of them, but it's that very connection that endangers both their lives, and once the wrong people find out about that connection, all hell breaking loose is an absolute certainty.
The book is short so the pacing is quick, though it times a bit too quick, making me feel as if it's skipping transitions so we get to the "juicier" parts of the story. Grayson's and Ellie's feelings for one another escalate and evolve faster than it would probably take for Grayson to kill someone or for Ellie to run away, making me wonder if this is really love or if it's something else altogether that could possibly develop into love. The end is a bit heartbreaking, but I'm expecting that to be resolved really quickly once we get the second book in the Ties series. All in all, Dangerous Ties was a good series starter and I give it four stars. ♥
