Review: Legally Charming by Lauren Smith (Ever After #1)

Note: This ARC was provided by the author via Give Me Books Promotions in exchange for an honest review.

Legally Charming is the first in author Lauren Smith's new Ever After contemporary romance series and has a highly intelligent grad student and successful lawyer gunning to become partner falling for each other while trying to keep their feelings at bay so as not to distract them from their professional ambitions. Neither one of them is looking for a committed relationship, what more love and all the promises of forever and always, but once Jared Redmond finds Felicity Hart asleep in his bed, they're bound to each other in ways they've never been with anyone else. But with the dreams they've had for themselves ripe for the taking, can they afford to lose focus now, even if it is for something as special as true love? Is their story headed for heartbreak or will they get their happy ending?

This was my first ever Lauren Smith read and it was a pretty good one, with nods to a couple of class fairy tales. It has an air of familiarity to it, meaning there are parts of the story that I've come across many a time in other books. Of course, with the plethora of romance novels out there, I get that distinguishing one from the other isn't necessarily an easy thing. But I do hope for creative twists that give the story that stamp that makes it known that it's the author's and no one else's. Here, we had the damsel in distress waiting to be rescued by her knight in shining in armor, the good girl swept away by the love of a bad boy, the virginal heroine falling for the worldly hero, etc. You get where I'm going with this. So yeah, that's what I meant when I said this was a very familiar read to me.

The story, in a general sense, is a fairly enjoyable one. It was an entertaining romance read and Smith's writing is worthy of attention. Both the main characters are quite likable although there was something stereotypical about them, with Jared coming off almost impossibly too perfect and Felicity improbably too naive, setting them up as the usual hero who awakens the heroine to the "wonders" she has yet to discover. This was also angst-free, and I'm one of those weird people who actually wants some angst with her love stories, mainly because I feel that it makes for a more meaningful read, especially if it requires the main characters to make a stand and fight for their love. Legally Charming does live up to its title--it IS a charming story. I just wanted a bit more of...everything. Three stars. ♥
