Review: Rescuing Dr. Marian by Lucy Lennox (Made Marian Legacy #1)

Note: An advance reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author.

Confession time! I'm a wee bit embarrassed to admit this, but I've yet to read the Made Marian series. I know, I know; you're probably wondering what the heck is wrong with me. That leads to my other slightly less embarrassing admission: I have to work my way through the first few books in the Forever Wilde series since I've only read the last three full-length novels so far. My introduction to Lucy Lennox's writing came by way of her After Oscar series, which was co-written with her sister, Molly Maddox. With the release of the first book in Lennox's Made Marian Legacy spin-off series, I was excited, as I always am, to read her newest release. However, I must admit that I worried over the fact that I hadn't read any of the Made Marian books, and I'm usually a stickler about reading stories that share the same book universe in order. But, my anticipation for Rescuing Dr. Marian won out, and I'm glad it did because I was able to fully enjoy this series starter and didn't feel lost or as if was missing something. Having said that, I'm even more determined to read the original series (and the rest of Lennox's back list) as soon as I can!

Thirty-four-year-old Foster Blake knows a thing or two about rescues. He was, after all, the sheriff of Majestic, Wyoming, and he's a part of the state's search and rescue. But he ends up needing to be rescued while on vacation in Hawaii when his ex spots him and makes it clear that he wouldn't mind rekindling their non-existent flame. Foster needn't look too far for help, however, thanks to Thomas Marian. The thirty-two-year-old emergency room doctor from New York steps in, pretending to be Foster's boyfriend. Locking lips may have taken things too far, but it was a kiss that turned out to be life-changing for both men. The problem? Tommy is straight AND he's in Hawaii to get married to his longtime girlfriend. So, Foster walks away, disheartened and angry, and he spends the next six months unsuccessfully trying to not think about Tommy. Then Foster gets the opportunity to work with the Slingshot Emergency Rescue Academy (SERA) for the summer in Legacy, Montana, an opportunity he'd be crazy to refuse. The catch? SERA's new interim medical director is none other than a now-single Tommy.

A kiss is a kiss is a kiss, but when it's one that results in upending things you believed to be true about yourself, well, then it isn't "just" a kiss. On paper, the small-town sheriff and the big-city doctor were a mismatch. Not only was Tommy straight, but he lived in New York and thrived in the somewhat controlled chaos of the ER; on the other hand, Foster was gay and lived in his hometown of Majestic, close to his family and friends, while playing doing a great job in the law and order scheme. But once you dig into their backgrounds, you realize that they have more in common than most, and the meddlesome yet well-meaning families and passion for SAR were just the beginning. I enjoyed getting to know these main characters, and that struggle for them to initially resist that mutual attraction when they were together in Legacy, and then try to push down on those feelings becoming so much more was with them heading up part of the training for SERA in the gorgeous but sometimes treacherous backdrop of Legacy was part and parcel of what made Rescuing Dr. Marian such a fantastic opening salvo. It snags five stars.
