"You don't have to prove anything," I squeeze his hand.
He falls to his knees and shuffles in front of me, then places his hands on my hips. I open my thighs, allowing him in. "I do. I need to prove to you that I'm not that guy. That I'm not who everyone else thinks I am. That you're my game-changer. My anomaly. My person."
I had a sneaking suspicion Emmett Noughton would end up being my favorite among the Noughton brothers, and after finishing his story with Briar Adams, it turns out he was the one I totally saw coming. The One I Didn't See Coming is the third novel in the Plain Daisy Ranch series from the bestselling writing duo of Piper Rayne, and at thirty, Emmett is the youngest brother of Jude (The One I Stood Beside) and Ben (One Last Summer and The One I Left Behind). He's the one that's got a reputation for being laidback, easygoing, and a playboy. No one takes him seriously, not even his own family. With the impending birth of Jude's child with his wife, Sadie, Bruce Noughton thinks Emmett needs to take on more responsibility on the ranch, but when Emmett makes suggestions he believes will be good for the ranch, they're shot down. He's quickly becoming frustrated and disheartened with the state of his unrest.
Then Briar, Ben's fiancée's, Gillian, half-sister, returns to Willowbrook, and well, Emmett is immediately shot down without him even shooting his shot. It's clear that the girl he remembered back in high school, when she was a freshman to his senior, doesn't think he's all that either. All Briar wants is to keep her distance and focus on being a yoga instructor at the ranch. But when she finds herself homeless, it's Emmett who offers up a spare room in his house for her to stay in for as long as she needs to. So, what happens when the girl who used to have a crush on the guy she never thought she could have shares quarters with him and is all up close and personal? Well, theirs is a romance no one ever so coming, but is there a happily-ever-after in store when Briar is keeping secrets from those closest to her and Emmett has never been in the position of being with the woman he wants forever with even if he feels unworthy?
Emmett, Emmett, Emmett. I knew there was so much more to him than the goofball who always lightened things up around his family. My heart broke for him during those moments where he seemed a bit lost in the midst of his older brothers finding love. There were times when it was almost as if he was someone who was better seen and not heard. There were those who underestimated him and pigeon-holed him based on what kind of person they thought they knew him to be. So when Briar came along and he could be fully himself and she saw who he truly was, I was absolutely all in with their coupling. I may have been a wee bit peeved when it came to Emmett's brothers and Briar's half-sister and how they treated him, especially Ben and Gillian insisting that Emmett not start anything with Briar. But true love, as always, prevails, and family, well, they learn a thing or two. From start to finish, I was emotionally invested, and I loved every single thing about The One I Didn't See Coming. I can't wait for our visit back to Willowbrook!
