There's a saying that goes "happy wife, happy life," but for Kate Meader's tenth Rookie Rebels novel, it's all about "hockey wife, hockey life". Hockey Wife is a marriage of convenience romance with an age-gap angle between the main characters. Dylan Bankowski, better known as Banks, is a veteran hockey player who has just been traded from Nashville to Chicago. At thirty-six, he's more than aware that his stint with the Rebels could be his last shot at winning the elusive Cup. The last thing he needs is for Georgia Goodwin to walk back into his life. They met during the NHL's All-Star Weekend as strangers, and woke up the next morning as husband and wife. She'd up and left without much of a goodbye, sending divorce/annulment (yes, I know they're two different things, but they were being interchanged in the story) papers via courier instead. So why is the socialite with a history of partying too much and is twelve years Dylan's junior back? Georgia tells him they need to stay married. She has her reasons, and while getting her husband to agree was easier than she expected, keeping up pretenses that they weren't falling for each other is far more difficult than either may have anticipated.
I'm just going to say it: Dylan Bankowski is my favorite Chicago Rebel. Yep, difficult as it may have been, especially considering that there are quite a few of them to choose from, both from the Chicago Rebels series and the current spin-off, Rookie Rebels. Maybe it's because he was such a grump who was a softie when it came to those who mattered most to him. There was just so much more to him than you would have expected, and the same goes with his Princess Peach, aka Georgia. There was a reason to her "madness", i.e. her perceived reckless and scandalous behavior. She and Dylan may not have appeared to be the ideal couple, but these two just worked in a way that made sense to them (and me!). The more time they were together, living under one roof as husband and wife and as pet parents to Cheddar, the undeniable fact that they clicked was as clear as day. I adored the Big Guy and Princess Peach (plus Cheddar!), and I highly recommend readers check out their bonus epilogue because it was the bow that wrapped everything quite nicely for Mr. and Mrs. Bankowski. Hockey Wife easily snags five stars.
