Review: "Reignite" by J.M. Darhower

When I saw that bestselling author J.M. Darhower had released a sequel to Extinguish, I was happily surprised. After reading the first book more than a year ago, I wondered if a second book would ever come to fruition but was still immensely satisfied with how the original story had ended. It was one of my favorite reads for 2013 and I consider it one of the best novellas I've ever come across. But now we have Reignite, the second and, presumably, final book in the series, and oh, how I fell for the story of Luce and Serah all over again. ♥

If you've already read the first book, then Lucifer (aka Luce) being the lead male character of this series shouldn't be a surprise. For those of you who have yet to read Extinguish, may I suggest you go ahead and do so. Please don't let the idea of having history's most infamous fallen angel being the star of the story stop you. It shouldn't matter whether you believe in God or not; you simply need to be able to appreciate a well-told story with compelling characters. It's really that good. After you're done reading Extinguish, read Reignite. Both books are novella in length so you could read one after the other in one day. ^.^

This second book picks up soon after the events of its predecessor. Serah is now mortal and holds no memories of Luce or their time together. Luce, on the other hand, watches her and remembers every single thing about her and when she was his, even if it was only for the briefest of moments. The sequel deals with the aftermath of Luce's plans and actions previously. Being with Serah has changed Luce but is it enough of a change for him to use his newly found free will in an expected or unexpected manner?

Reignite didn't feel rushed or forced. No one really likes a sequel being released just for the heck of placating fans and then end up being an utter disappointment. There was still a story that needed to be told and it was told in a manner that only J.M. Darhower could have come up with in that ingenious mind of hers. I absolutely loved this book as much as I did the first one and Luce and Serah have definitely etched an even deeper place in my Favorite Couples in Fiction list. Reignite gets five stars and this series goes on my list of all-time favorites. ♥

Date read: 19 October 2014
