Review: "Maybe This Time" by A.M. Arthur

Maybe This Time is the second book in the Belonging series by A.M. Arthur and spotlights Ezra Kelley and Donner Davis' story. Ezra was introduced to readers in the first book, No Such Thing, and I, personally, found the guy to be quite a scene stealer. ^.^ I would never have thought that Alessandro Silva and Jaime Winters' flirty friend had such a dark past.

Ezra Kelley doesn't do relationships. He prefers one-night stands and quickies that don't have any strings attached. He likes being in control but lives his life like a rudderless boat without any specific direction. He isn't close to his family and his father has never made a secret of just how much of a disappointment Ezra has always been and has never been accepting of his son's sexuality. Ezra doesn't know what he wants to do with the rest of his life but one thing he does know is that he wants Donner Davis in his bed.

Donner Davis has worked at the Pot O'Gold for years, enjoying his position as a bartender. Donner's childhood was less than ideal but he's known how it is to love and be loved in return only for it to end with the murder of his partner two years ago. He decides to re-start the feeding program his partner started and wants to begin moving forward with his life. He knows Ezra's reputation but can't deny their mutual attraction. He sees beyond Ezra's flirtatious nature and realizes he wants more than one night with him.

Both Ezra and Donner have undergone their share of pain but while Donner has been able to live and learn from it, Ezra's past still casts a long shadow over him. He masks it by partying whenever he feels like it and while he's more than friendly, he doesn't really share all that much of himself or what he's been through with others, even his friends. Being with Donner opens his eyes to the very real possibility that there's actually someone willing to love and accept him without reservation or hesitation.

While I did enjoy No Such Thing, I found myself liking Maybe This Time even more. Ezra and Donner are characters that you can't help but fall in love with, especially since they're so multidimensional. Their respective back stories are equally devastating and interesting and you can see how differently they've both dealt with what's happened to them in the past. I loved Ezra and Donner and their story is one worth reading, thus the 4.5-star rating. ♥
