Review: The Spencer Cohen Series: Book One by N.R. Walker

Spencer, Spencer, Spencer. Admittedly, I'm not one to go for a guy--whether fictional or otherwise--with a beard or even a smattering of chest hair. It's a personal preference, and while the whole chest hair thing is still a no-go (definitely not book boyfriend material on my end), the beard thing isn't as unattractive as I once thought, but then it depends on what kind of beard we're talking about here, and in the case of one Spencer Cohen, an Australian who's been living the United States and whose main source of income is playing the role of a client's boyfriend in order to get an ex to re-consider a recently  relationship and spur on a possible reconciliation. Spencer's good at his job, but his latest client, cartoonographer Andrew Landon, stirs up a new challenge: keeping Spencer's unexpected and growing attraction to Andrew at bay.

This is the first in a trilogy of books about Spencer and Andrew and even though it does end in somewhat of a cliffhanger--GAH!--it does what all series starters do: introduces you to the main characters and a story that the author hopes you'll fall in love with enough to make you come back for me when the next installment comes out. Well, congratulations, N.R. Walker, you got me, hook, line, and sinker. I loved Spencer and Andrew and this was a sweet and lighthearted story that was different enough to make it stand out in an already crowded M/M romance arena. How can you resist the tale of two men who knowingly enter into a fake relationship in order to get one man's ex to see exactly what he let go of and then have the these men develop affection for one another in the short amount of time they're together?

And there story isn't over yet! Like I mentioned earlier, this does end in a cliffhanger, though I wouldn't classify it as "evil", since it still ends on a hopeful note. Of course, because there are two more additional books in the series, I'm thinking that the second one will present some sort of conflict that will make either or both Spencer and Andrew take a step back from their blossoming relationship. This is nothing more than a wild guess, but whatever route the author decides to take with Spencer and Andrew's story, I'll be ready and waiting for it, already looking forward to seeing where the journey takes these two. This first book in The Spencer Cohen Series also happens to be my first N.R. Walker read (although I have her free reads on my Kindle app), and I'm already itching to add more of her stuff on my to-be-read list. Five stars! ♥
