Review: "Rush" by Beth Yarnall

The Pleasure at Home series by author Beth Yarnall is about the cast and crew of a home shopping show by the same name, one that specializes in promoting and selling adult toys. The first book, Rush, focuses on the popular host of the show, Miyuki Price-Jones, and the man assigned to protect her from an obsessed stalker and an ultra-conservative group protesting the show, Lucas Vega.

There's an instant attraction between Mi and Lucas and while that's something that many can relate to, the intensity of Lucas' feelings for Mi in the very short amount of time they were together was a tad difficult for me to believe, especially since Mi has secrets she refuses to share willingly and Lucas has an issue with secretive women. I also didn't feel like they clicked as a romantic couple, so not only did it feel like their feelings from lust to love were rushed but also a bit forced.

All that being said, I did like the suspense thriller aspect of the book. The show being sabotaged and the stalker after Mi had me wondering if they were one and the same person and if the suspect mentioned was just a scapegoat. The book keeps you on your toes and the story makes you want to figure who's hiding what and for what reason. Even Mi's final revelation in the latter part of the story caught me off guard and I consider that a good thing because I obviously didn't see it coming. ^.^

Rush was a romantic suspense novel and though the romance part may not have fully hit my satisfaction quota, the suspense part certainly did. Two of the characters who play supporting roles in the book, Cal Sellers, Lucas' close friend and Mi's boss, and Lucy Monroe, Mi's close friend and former co-host, are both interesting and are the lead characters in the second book. Taking everything into consideration, I'm giving Rush three stars out of five. ♥

Date read: 22 October 2014
