Review: "Crescendo" by Rachel Haimowitz

Note: This ebook was provided by Riptide Publishing via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

They say that patience is a virtue...and it is one that I am know not to have. When I finished reading and reviewing the first book in the Song of the Fallen duet by Rachel Haimowitz, Counterpoint, I immediately had to put in a request on NetGalley to read and review the sequel. And so I waited...FIVE DAYS. Yes, for someone lacking in patience, that's a long time. When I got the email saying my request was approved, I immediately went on NetGalley and clicked "Download". I ended up not following my self-imposed rule of not starting a new book in the wee hours of the morning. So, from 3am 'til 5:25am, I became absorbed with all things Freyrík and Ayden and what a glorious nearly two and a half hours they were! ♥

Crescendo picks up soon after the events of Counterpoint and we find Freyrík and Ayden making the journey to see the Aegis after being summoned to the High Court of Aegea. Once they get there, life for Freyrík and Ayden becomes even more difficult than the ones they faced during their first weeks together or even during the Surge. Ayden's magic is bound by the starfall that has been soldered shut and the deafening silence he must endure takes him close to the breaking point. On the other hand, Freyrík must deal with worrying for Ayden's safety and welfare while failing miserably at trying to hide his love and affection for him. Add to that both men trying to deal with the politics and intrigue of the High Court of Aegea as well as being under the watchful eye of humans and elves alike.

I thoroughly enjoyed this sequel because you could see that it continued to develop the story between the two lead characters. Freyrík and Ayden need to navigate through everything and everyone standing in their way and find themselves sometimes torn between their love for and faith in one another and their loyalty to the people and things that they have believed in all their lives. Still, it is the trust and respect they have nurtured for each other that continues to prevail and the sacrifices that they were both willing to do and did do for each other had me sighing in contentment each and every time. ^.^

Crescendo had all the elements I look for in a book: well-rounded and interesting characters that I can fall in love with, an engaging story within a fantastical but still relatable world, and writing that is lyrical and compelling but easily understood. Like I mentioned in my review for Counterpoint, the fantasy romance genre isn't my top favorite but the Song of the Fallen duet is irresistibly addictive and had me encouraging people to read it. So, yes, I'm highly recommending this wonderful sequel of a book and hope that you'll love it as much as I do. Crescendo gets five-plus stars, which gives the duet an average of five-plus perfect stars. ♥
